SAFE SPACE STATMENT
We ask that you acknowledge our Sapphic Speakeasy Safe Space Standards.
We know this statement does not mean feelings of unsafety will never occur. By having you acknowledge these critical statements, we believe that we can reduce that occurrence.
We believe everyone has the right to feel safe and included at a Sapphic Speakeasy Event. Regardless of age, ancestry, colour, family status, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, mental disability, physical disability, place of origin, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or source of income (Alberta Human Rights Act).
Sapphic Speakeasy will not tolerate abusive or discriminatory behaviour. Such behaviour is grounds for removal from a Sapphic Speakeasy venue and may result in a permanent Sapphic Speakeasy ban. The venues we work with reserves the right to ban any patron from their bar or our partnered events.
Offensive attire, including (but not limited to) hate symbols or culturally appropriative attire, is not welcome at Sapphic Speakeasy. Such attire may be grounds for removal from a Sapphic Speakeasy venue and may result in a permanent Sapphic Speakeasy ban.
If you witness abusive or discriminatory behaviour at Sapphic Speakeasy, please speak with a team member, bar staff, or security personnel.
STATEMENT ON ANTI-OPPRESSIVE PRACTICES
We ask that all of our patrons and the allied bars we work with are aware of anti-oppressive practices. Anti-oppressive practices seek to identify strategies to redistribute power to address the systemic inequalities that contribute to the cyclical nature of oppression.
Simply put, be aware of your privilege and power. Have an awareness of how your presence may affect another person's comfort level within a space. Consider your place within the oppression of others and help us make strides to ending oppression.
Feeling empowered is incredibly important, so please reach out to us if you have come to one of our events and not felt welcome.
STATEMENT ON CONSENT
Sapphic Speakeasy stands with survivors and believes that consent is enthusiastic and ongoing.
If it is not a hell yes from them, and is a no or anything in-between, do not proceed. Consent has to be a clear embodied yes and given freely.
Consent is ongoing and act-specific. This includes but is not limited to sexual activities, dancing, touching, and even some conversations.
Consent must be mutual, enthusiastic, and
sober. It is on you to affirm that someone can give consent and is not too drunk to do so.
We want Sapphic Speakeasy to be a safe space and ask that you follow our consent standards and reach out for support or resources should you need them.
We do not have the expertise or authority to mediate conflicts or provide advice on conflict or crisis resolution. If you require support, please contact the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton at 1-866-403-8000 or the Edmonton Distress Line at 780-482-4357.
Sapphic Speakeasy does not offer refunds on tickets to events unless due to a cancellation of the event or full closure due to COVID-19. For merchandise we understand that without trying something on you may not know your size, therefore if the garment has not been worn we will do an exchange for you. We do not do refunds on merchandise only exchanges at this time.
